Morwellham Quay and Paignton Zoo

We are still down in Devon this week with my picture collection. A visit to Morwellham Quay near Tavistock and a visit to Paignton Zoo.

This week there is very much an animal theme, from pigs to horse from monkeys to Zebra...

The Cockerel at Morwellham Quay

The Cockerel at Morwellham Quay

Morwellham Quay was once a thriving copper mine port and village but now it is home to a world heritage site. As we drove down the very narrow lanes to the site and through to the car park it really feels like you are driving through a village, with cottages, shops, a school and the River Tamar.

This is where the BBC 2 programme Edwardian Farm was filmed with Peter, Alex and Ruth who showed you how village life would have been back then. They also done another programme called Victorian Farm but this was filmed elsewhere in the country.

Piglets on the farm

Piglets on the farm

Where the programmed was filmed in the farmyard is now open for you to have a stroll around. It was lovely, the old buildings to look at, chickens running free and best of all a beautiful Clydesdale horse that I fell in love with called "Jack"
Hansome "Jack"

Hansome "Jack"

What a lovely chap he is, he could come and live with me. I fell in love with him...
The other horses

The other horses

The other horses were out in the field and any of them could have come home with me to...

We understand that the large black shire is called Tom and the large black and white shire is called Prince, they used them both on the programme, not sure of the Shetlands name

The large waterwheel

The large waterwheel

This very large water wheel is on display and still turns. There is lots to do here, as well as looking round the village and going into lots of the cottages and buildings there is also a narrow gauge railway which takes you along the edge of the Tamar River and on underground where you have a tour of the mines that work all those years ago. This was our favourite bit of the visit, (sorry sadly no pictures of that). Even the dog was allowed to go on the train ride but if you take your dog be aware that the ride is noisy, bumpy and very dark.
Having fun

Having fun

Boys large and small enjoying the park... Not sure who is having more fun.

Aldabra Tortoise

They were huge and very slow... Watching them was very funny.
Hamadryas Baboons

Hamadryas Baboons

These were so cute, sitting on the rocks cuddling, our oldest son turned round to me and said "that looks like you and Dad" and then ran off....
Merkets

Merkets

You can't beat watching the Merkets, they are very funny.
Zebra

Zebra

Every zoo has a Zebra but I think they are lovely although this one seems to be turning orange..
Giraffe

Giraffe

This was one of the many giraffes they had including a baby who was very cute.

All in all a great day out at Paignton Zoo plenty to see and do. They have a great website which has lots of details on how to plan your trip etc.
