Looking towards the village

Looking towards the village

Here we are looking towards the village of Castleton where Peveril Castle is located. The walk to the castle from the village is up a long zig-zag path. Here we are about a quarter of the way up the path.
Half way up and still going!

Half way up and still going!

Some of us had to keep stopping for a rest and that seemed to be a good time for me to take a photo.
Finally the top

Finally the top

Finally at the top and here the views down to the village are wonderful and the hills in the background are called Hope Valley and Cave Dale which looked lovely even if the sun wasn't at its best...

Jack and Jess

Jack and Jess

After the climb to the top of the hill Jack and Jess sat and waited while they waited for the rest of us to finish the climb.
The Keep

The Keep

The Keep was built by Henry II in 1176, this is sadly the only large part of the castle that survive apart from the curtain walls.

How much is that doggy in the window

How much is that doggy in the window

This was a house window in the village of Castleton and this beautiful dog was watching us all walk by. I wanted to go and ask how much he was but my husband wouldn't let me as they might say I could have him....

What you looking at

What you looking at

This is my nosey dog wanting to know what Kev is looking at, she loves riding on the steam trains as long as she is allowed to stand and look out the window.
68013 waiting at the station

68013 waiting at the station

This is Peak Railway which runs 4 miles between Rowsley South and Matlock Riverside, it was once part of The Midland Railway line.
78019 at Great Central Railway

78019 at Great Central Railway

This was the loco we traveled behind on The Great Central Railway. 78019 was built in March 1954 and was one of 65 of this class. She was originally based at Kirby Stephen in the Lake District and then moved around the North of the country before her last stop was at Crewe South before she was then withdrawn in 1966 and then with lots of locos onto Barry scrapyard.

She was eventually purchased by a member of The Severn Valley Railway and moved her in March 1973. In 1998 she went for restoration and is now based on the Great Central Railway.

Loco number 5542 on The Battlefield Line

Loco number 5542 on The Battlefield Line

This loco was built in 1928 where she ran many miles around the south west counrtyside. She was withdrawn in December 1961 and then spent around 14 years in Barry scrapyard. Finally she was sold to The West Somerset Railway Association in 1976. From what I understand the loco, in 1981, started to be restored but it took a futher 20 years before she was in steam again.

In this photo she was running on the Battlefield line in Warwickshire and we believe the loco will be here until the end of November 2010.

Loco number 1306

Loco number 1306

This is loco 1306 called "Mayflower" she was built at North British Locomotive Co, Glasgow in 1948. She worked until 1967. The Great Central Railway bought her in 1978 and she has to move again in 1989. Then she went back to her old shed at Hull Dairycoates but the ground was going to be redevelop and she was on the move again and had a complete overhaul. She arrived at Shackerstone in 2007.
